Astete majored in Sculpture at the Catholic University in Santiago. He has taught at the workshop of sculptor Francisco Gazitúa, at the School of Art of the Catholic University and in the Sculpture Workshop at the Municipal Theater. He has designed the sets for various theatrical pieces and has worked in advertising. Astete characterized iconic characters at the Experimental Workshop, replicating them with surprising accuracy on the skin of the models. Applying an ample dose of humor, he converted epic celebrities into simple human beings.
